As a non-Indigenous settler, it is important to me to reflect upon and include Indigenous perspectives and pedagogical structures in my teaching practice. As an educator living on the traditional and unceded territory of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, I feel it is my duty respectfully engage with and share Secwépemc history and aspects of their culture that are appropriate for me to share. Because land and knowledge are inextricably tied, it is essential that educators teaching on traditional lands share the specific Indigenous history of that land. Moving forward, I plan to Indigenize and decolonize my future classroom to the best of my ability to ensure that it is a safe an inclusive learning environment for all.
