The 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation report are directly involved with Canada’s education system. In order to address and begin to undo the ongoing effects of Canada’s residential school system on Indigenous communities, educators must inform their teaching with these calls to action. Because Indigenous cultural genocide was committed through residential schools, it is essential that the modern education system take extra care to ensure that inclusivity, decolonization, and Indigenization be at the forefront of the education framework.
As a teacher candidate, I am acutely aware of the damages that have been done to Indigenous communities across our country, and also our globe. As such, I commit myself to be an advocate for Truth and Reconciliation in the classroom and beyond. I plan to both directly and indirectly do my part to address the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples by continually educating myself and informing my practice through the lens of Truth and Reconciliation.
